Travel Confessions and Fresh Face Friday

travel confessions

Confession: I haven't been writing as much about travel as much as I would like. The last couple of weeks have been exhausting and I've take time to focus on my personal life, which was also reflected in this space. And that was good / needed for me to do. But I've got a lot travel posts coming up in the near future that I'm really excited about. I thought that I'd kick off the travel updates with a few travel confessions I've been thinking about lately.

Travel Confessions:

1. Grumpy when hungry. Yup. I get very, very grumpy when I'm hungry. And my mind switches into a one-track beast: find lots of food. Lesson learned: pack snacks every time I leave the house.
2. Too many pictures. Occasionally, I take too many pictures while traveling. And lately I've been wanting to experience things from out behind the camera. That being said, I get really irritated when people don't take pictures while traveling. Very silly, but it bugs me. Lesson learned: put down the camera every once in a while; I'm judge people who don't take any photographs.
3. Loud American. And up until this whole government shutdown mess I was pretty darn proud of it. No, I'm still proud of it. Yeah we mess up sometimes but I really do love the US California. Lesson learned: I want to slap the next person that says “I don't think of you as American” as if it is a compliment.
4. Homebody. Sometimes I prefer to spend a day in bed when traveling. Even when my time is limited and I know that I should go out an explore, sometimes I really enjoy sitting in bed all day reading. Oops. Lesson learned: This is absolutely acceptable.
5. Over packer. I always, always, always over pack. Going away for 2 days? Bring 6 days worth of outfits. Am I the only one? Lesson learned: I'll never learn.

What is one thing that you love about yourself? I like that I am a good listener to my friends. I'm always here to help and spend time with them when they need to have someone to talk to.
If you could pack up all your belongings & move somewhere new, where would you move? I would move to Canada. I have always been attracted by that country. It looks so beautiful and peaceful.

What is one thing that you love about yourself? Over the years, I've learned to roll with the punches. I'm naturally a very uptight and anxious person but I'm slowly learning to let go and let nature run its course. I think that's what happens when you're constantly moving around due to your husband's job – you learn to deal! I mean, I'm still a ball of anxiety, but it's much better than it was even a few months ago.
If you could pack up all your belongings & move somewhere new, where would you move? I've always wanted to travel to Asia, so probably Thailand. A few of our close friends went to Bangkok last year and their photos were out of this world. If we were in Thailand for any extended period of time, I'd definitely work at an elephant sanctuary. But let's be serious… I'd move anywhere.

  • Gosh, I’m like the opposite of you! I usually take too few pictures because I want to experience it as much as I can, and hope my visual memory helps me capture each moment… But then I usually regret it.

  • I can identify with a lot of these confessions myself. Especially the ones about overpacking and taking too many photos. I must, must, must learn to put my camera down sometimes ;) xxx

  • Kristina C

I am not an American so I can’t relate to that one :)

But I am sooo with you on no.4: I LOVE having a day to relax when I travel, otherwise I just feel overwhelmed with all the new experiences, tastes, sites, language. Nothing wrong with just lying on the beach/in hotel bed and reading a book…

I usually take 150 photos on the first day of trip and than that number decreases to 15 on the last day. I would love to be rich and have professional photographer with me on travels so that I could just enjoy and not think about taking photos.

Overpacking? No. I am just making sure that I am prepared and have extra of everything.

    • hiring a professional photographer to follow me around during travels would be AMAZING. If only I had a ton of money …

  • all of these confessions pertain to me….some fortunately, the packing is always unfortunate though…always.

  • haha I love your sense of humor. It’s so unique and you and dry and funny and hi. I like you.

  • Casey C

I’m totally an over-packer and over-photo taker…it’s ridiculous. I almost have a 1TB external hard drive completely full of travel photos. I need an intervention! :)

So happy to have you on the blog today! Enjoy your weekend, my friend!

    • I actually do a horrible job of backing up my photos to an external hard drive. I need to get better at that!

  • I take too many pictures regardless. haha.

  • Yeap, I over do everything. Packing, picture taking, snack packing to the point where I still have snacks leftover after a trip. My fiance liked to call me a ‘travel hoarder’, I like to think of myself as a ‘comfort traveler’ lol.

  • Mal

Thank you for the feature Nicole! Have a great weekend :)

” Lesson learned: I want to slap the next person that says “I don’t think of you as American” as if it is a compliment.”
Ugh, I hate that too. What exactly does that even mean? That I’m not like characters on TV shows? Have mercy.

  • I am the same way when I’m hungry:) I always tend to carry snacks now because no one wants the beast coming out. And I’m an over packer, too! Glad I’m not the only one:)

  • Rachel Murphree

Dude, when I am hungry, it’s on. When I first met my boyfriend, he thought that I was exaggerating and being a dumb girl when I warned him of this. He also says that he used to consider it a deal breaker in women. But he’s now realized that it is something completely beyond my control. I’ve actually started crying due to hunger!

    • it is COMPLETELY beyond your control. you can’t help it. Thank goodness he finally understands.

  • I always pack too many pairs of shoes. You never know when you might need to go from boots to flip flops! And funny what you said about not taking photos. The thing that sometimes bugs me is the people you see walking along a busy street with a hand-held video. I often wonder if those videos ever get watched? Give me pics any day.

    Claire xx

    • yes! you can never have too many shoes. And I agree about the videos. I take a video or two per trip and hardly ever watch them.

  • Z K

Hahaha, the hunger thing is SO TRUE. I’ve been meaning to do a travel lessons post as well…

  • I’m the same way when hungry. Hungry + Angry (or grumpy) = HANGRY. If I tell my husband I’m getting hangry, he knows we need to eat ASAP. :-) And I’m also a compulsive over-packer. Options! I need options! :-)

  • UGH Jon’s family barely takes any photos on holidays – at least, they didn’t until his sister got Instagram! I was able to follow along on their trip to Greece last summer because of that :P

    • how do they live that way?! I understand not wanting a camera in your face the whole time, but a picture every now and then is needed!
