In addition to sitting out in the sun, going to the beach, and all of the other ABCs of summer, May through August is the perfect time for binge-watching TV shows. Lately a few international / foreign TV shows have caught my attention. Below are 8 shows that I'm currently obsessed with (as in binge-watching like crazy) and 1 that I haven't started yet but it at the top of my list.

Binge-Watching: 9 International TV Shows Worth Your Time

9. Luther – UK

This crime drama, starring The Wire's Idris Elba, has been recognized internationally. Elba work as a Detective Chief Inspector hunting down criminals in the serious (and serial) crime unit. But turns out he has a bit of a dark side as well. Entire series available on Netflix.

8. Borgen – Denmark

I haven't had a chance to see this yet but I have heard nothing but incredible reviews. The show focuses on the frist female Prime Minster of Denmark and is apparently amazing. It isn't available for streaming but you can get it on DVD through Netflix.

7. Bron (The Bridge) – Sweden/Denmark

This television collaboration centers upon a murder that takes place on the bridge that connects Denmark and Sweden. The show has also been remade in the UK and as well as the current remake airing on FX. I think that I might be especially drawn to this show since I crossed that bridge several times when I was in Copenhagen, Denmark and Malmo, Sweden. Season 1 available on Hulu.

6. Les Revenants (The Returned) – France

This show is absolutely terrifying. Or at least it is to me. The show is about dead townsfolk (mostly children) returning to life and how their families, friends, and town responds. The living dead are almost the same as they were before they died but none of them can remember the moment or circumstances surrounding their deaths. Get ready to get creeped out. Season 1 available on Netflix.

5.The Fall – Northern Ireland

This 5-episode season is the perfect series for a nice afternoon spent binging. Gillian Anderson is incredible as a stoic detective and Jamie Dornan shines as a serial killer / family man. I was hooked from the opening scene. Entire series available on Netflix.

4. Summer Heights High – Australia

Ah, this show is so good. Too good. The mockumentary has Chris Lilly playing three different characters including Ja'mie King. Do yourself a favor and rent the series on Amazon.

3. Forbrydelsen (The Killing) – Denmark

This is the show that really started my love affair with international television shows. While I've had trouble getting into the American version of the show, I went through the Danish version very quickly.I actually haven't been able to find it streaming anywhere (legally) so I rented the DVDs old-school style. So worth it.

2. Sherlock – UK

I just finished seasons 1-3 and I can't believe that we have to wait until 2016 for season 4! The show is smart, hilarious, and not afraid to show the darker side of Sherlock Holmes. Entire series available on Netflix.

1. Sailor Moon – Japan

You guys. If I believed in God I'd be thanking her for telling Hulu to release all 200 original Sailor Moon episodes (with subtitles or new dubs). That means we get to see Sailor Moon, Sailor Moon R, Sailor Moon S (my favorite ), Sailor Moon Super S, Sailor Moon Sailor Stars AND Sailor Moon Crystal, the reboot of the original. SO much excitement I just can't handle it.

  • The Bridge is the best!! Watched it in Swedish/Danish (yes, filmed in two languages which only increases the wow factor) and German and absolutely loved it! Can’t wait for season 3!

  • Nice list! My favorite international show is Slings and Arrows :)

  • haha I just started watching the new sailor moon too! :)

  • I notice that no shows from Italy made it…. guess that makes sense since it’s just like naked girls dancing on terrible talk shows… Use to LOVE sailor moon!

Summer Heights High gets me every time! I love when Mr. G’s room is first introduced. His dancing is soooo good.

  • I haven’t seen any of these! Now I want to sit down and watch them all!

  • I did not realize The Killing was originally a Dutch program…will have to look that up! I’ve watched The Fall, but that is it from this list.

  • My husband binge watches Luther like it’s his job. I haven’t watched it, but the few scenes I’ve overheard have been suuuper intense.

  • I’ve watched Les Revenants in like one day a few months back and it’s still haunting me. It’s beautiful and intricate and weird and scary and raw. I’ve recently heard about Bron on Van’s blog and I cannot wait to look into it!

  • I love Summer Heights High! Have you seen all the variations? There is a show coming out soon that is just about Jonah! I also love love love Sherlock. But, I hate having to wait so long to see new episodes.

I know I told you this already, but I am so happy you got into Sherlock. Now I am even more happy that you are watching a Chris Lilley show. I have all his shows on DVD. He is so talented. My birthday this year was Chris Lilley themed. Ok, that is all. :)

  • the only one on this list i’ve watched is sherlock and i loved it. excited to look into your other suggestions!

  • I keep hearing about how much I would love Sherlock. Love the other recommendations! :)

  • Thanks for hosting this awesome link-up each week!

  • Salior Moon is my childhood, Sherlock and Doctor Who are my world. Since you watch Summer Nights High watch Jamie the spin-off. Same guy and it’s just as a good hot mess.

  • I am ALWAYS curious about international shows… But I get a bit overwhelmed if I try to find some myself! Thanks for this list… I’m super interested! I’m also really excited some of these are on Netflix and Hulu. Perfect!
