Sake Tasting at Takara Sake

Sake Tasting at Takara Sake USA

I hate sake. Or, perhaps I should say that I hated sake. For as long as I can remember, I have hated the way it smells and hated the way it tastes. While everyone else gets sake when we go out for sushi, I typically opt for beer, white wine, or green tea. So I was a little uncertain when my mom suggested that we go sake tasting at the Takara Sake USA in Berkeley.

Surprise, surprise, but I actually really enjoyed the sake tasting experience! Takara offers 7 different tasting menus depending on the type of sake you like. I went with the variety course that included a range of cold or hot and sweet or dry sakes. The best part is that the tasting includes 7 different types of sake (or 9 if you have an excellent server who let's you try a couple of extras) for only $5.

I figured out that the reason why I always hated sake so much is because I hadn't tried a nice quality, cold sake. Turns out I actually like some sake! I ended up leaving Takara with a couple bottles of an unpasteurized cold sake, a ginjo style (read: premium) cold sake, and my favorite: a sparkling sake.

  • I have not tried it! I am so wimpy/ tend to always stick with the beer!!

  • First, I have had sake before. It’s crazy stuff! Second, MY POST WAS THE MOST VIEWED!?!?! I feel so loved right now, and I am just beaming with joy! :) Yay!

  • I’ve never actually had sake before. I had no idea there were so many different kinds!

  • I’ve only tried sake once or twice and like you never really liked it, but is may be because I’ve never had many types or good quality sake. Might need to make a trip to Berkeley:)

I’ve never considered myself a fan of Sake, but I bet if I tasted different kind I’d find something I actually like. I need to find an event like this!

  • I like a few kinds of Sake so this sounds like a blast. I’m putting it on my list of things to do one day.

  • I usually don’t like Sake as well, but sparkling Sake intrigues me! x

  • I haven’t had Sake in a while. I don’t think I liked it by itself, but I did like the Sake bombs. That was so long ago though that I don’t even know if I would like one of those now either!

  • I like my sake hot and I personally prefer to take it down like a shot, instead of sipping on it.

  • I’ve never been a fan of Sake, but I would be willing to do a Sake tasting! Great idea – putting it on my bucket list.

  • I never found any I liked either until my mom brought home a plum kind from Japan and it was amazing! I’d love to do a sake tasting though and expand my non-existent knowledge.

  • I actually love sake and am usually the only one to get it. and hot is my fave. hmm now I need to go somewhere with sake soon!

  • I tried sake once and … let’s just say coffee is still my number one drink of choice =)

  • La Tache

Well since I LIVE in Berkeley I guess I will have to check this place out! I see a fun date night in our future :-)

  • I’ve never tried Sake, I usually go for plum wine since I like my drinks sweet. The sake taste testing sounds fun and affordable and even better since I’m not far from Berkeley. :-)

  • I’ve tried Sake once. It’s not for me. It tasted like rubbing alcohol to me :(

  • I loveeee sake, hot or cold! But my husband hates it! He’s tried it hot (that one I thought he would actually like) and I think maybe one variation of a cold sake, but I still can’t get him to like it! Maybe I’ll have to try to get him to explore this sake thing a little more! I would LOVE to do a sake tasting!

  • I’ve only had sake twice, and one of those times was a sake bomb (classy fail). I wasn’t a huge fan, but the other time it was also a very sweet variety which I typically don’t like with any alcoholic drinks. A tasting sounds like a good way to ease into it.

  • I tried sake at the resort where we honeymooned and was not impressed. Maybe I should try a sake tasting!

  • I have never thought of sake tasting before! And I’m not too far from Berkeley. For only $5, I’m definitely intrigued. :)

  • I haven’t tried sake before, but I’ve thought about trying it for a while now. Thanks for the pointers. Sounds like a fun way to spend the day:)
