I hate sake. Or, perhaps I should say that I hated sake. For as long as I can remember, I have hated the way it smells and hated the way it tastes. While everyone else gets sake when we go out for sushi, I typically opt for beer, white wine, or green tea. So I was a little uncertain when my mom suggested that we go sake tasting at the Takara Sake USA in Berkeley.
Sake Tasting at Takara Sake
Surprise, surprise, but I actually really enjoyed the sake tasting experience! Takara offers 7 different tasting menus depending on the type of sake you like. I went with the variety course that included a range of cold or hot and sweet or dry sakes. The best part is that the tasting includes 7 different types of sake (or 9 if you have an excellent server who let's you try a couple of extras) for only $5.
I figured out that the reason why I always hated sake so much is because I hadn't tried a nice quality, cold sake. Turns out I actually like some sake! I ended up leaving Takara with a couple bottles of an unpasteurized cold sake, a ginjo style (read: premium) cold sake, and my favorite: a sparkling sake.
