Lies that Pinterest Told Me in the Kitchen

This weekend I did a little guest post for Paige over at Eloping Stethoscope. Although you can click here to see the full post on Paige’s blog, I thought that I’d share it with you all as well!

I have a serious love/hate relationship with Pinterest. Love it because it provides great ideas for food and crafts … and hate it because every time I try to make something it comes out looking completely different than the pinned picture. I like to call this Lies That Pinterest Told Me (you can see a previous post here), and I wanted to share one of those lies with you all.

Having recently switched to a vegetarian diet, I’m always on the hunt for quick and easy vegetarian dishes packed with protein and found a great recipe for Quinoa and Black Bean Lettuce Wraps on Pinterest.

Don’t those look pretty? Well, mine didn’t end up looking so nice.

Step One: Get together the ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup chopped raw onion (I used red, but also added some green onion)
  • 1 red or yellow pepper (I used orange, so sue me)
  • 1/2 can black beans (I used a whole can)
  • 1 cup quinoa
  • 1 cup salsa
  • 1 avocado
  • Fran’s Red Hot (what the heck is this? I used Red Pepper Flakes instead)
  • Salt & Pepper
  • Bibb lettuce.

Right off the bat, I fail and bought the wrong kind of lettuce. Might not seem like a big deal but (spoiler alert) not all lettuce is good for wraps.

So far, so good. If you’ve never made quinoa before, you want to cook it in 2 cups of water per 1 cup of dry quinoa. First, though, make sure that you give it a good rinse to make sure that you get the bitter coating off before you cook it.

Step 3: Chop up your onion, and pepper
Done and Done. So far, so good.

Step 4: Add all your goodies into one large bowl.
Thus far, this recipe is pretty easy … too easy?

Step 5: Mix it up real good, add to lettuce wrap, and enjoy!

Step 6: Truth or Lie?
The photo on the top is from pinterest, and the one on the bottom is my own. Looks like this pin was fairly true! While my end result looked nothing like the picture I found on Pinterest, it still ended up pretty good! And it only took me 20 minutes to make, start to finish!

There seems to be only a few big differences between yours and Pintest’s photos, really. The Lettuce on yours is longer and not as artful arranged (but then, who has time for that?). The other two big things are actually just photography tricks. The two photos have different lighting (Pinterest has natural lighting with no shadow; yours was taken inside (“warmer” colored lighting) and is slightly backlit) and your photo is a more overhead shot, while pinterest’s was at eye level with the food and was probably shot with a macro lens.

What I’m saying is, if it tastes good, you probably did just as well as the original maker. They just intended theirs for visuals mainly, while you were more concerned about eating it. And it sounds yummy so thanks for sharing!

Lol I love this series, I have months of fails and successes via Pinterest. This one looks good though but I mean in general, who can EVER get it to look like it does on Pinterest? No one. Except the food photographer that shot it in the first place. Lol
